Young Writers' Program

The Young Writers' 2016 Program kicks off July 11th.

Every summer, the A&M-Texarkana English program sponsors the Texarkana Young Writers’ Workshop, a two-week program open to students from across the region from 2nd to 12th grade.

YWW participants spend their time engaged in reading, writing, and artistic activities designed to develop and deepen their understanding of genres and themes often left underexplored in traditional classrooms. In previous summers, participants have explored genres including myths, fairy tales, travel memoirs, adventure writing, proposals, poetry, one-day plays, character sketches, short fiction, and graphic novels.

By the end of the program, our young writers have much to show from their efforts, products they showcase in our final Closing Ceremony open to parents, family, and campus and community friends.

Students then have the opportunity to publish their best work in the program’s annual anthology.

The Young Writers’ Program is grateful to its sponsors for making this vital community literacy project a continued success:

  • Texarkana Gazette

  • Arkansas Community Foundation/Texarkana Area Community Foundation

  • Kiwanis Club of Texarkana

  • Wilbur Smith Rotary Club

For more information about the program, contact Dr. Corrine Hinton, Assistant Professor of English at 903.223.3124 or Corrine.Hinton@tamut.edu.
